SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

The Swiss Create Award

Last month, we conducted the second audit with the eight businesses who are participating in the award process. All of them had brought many improvements into their business management that have created many positive changes.

Viet Thang Company
Viet Long Company

Business owners have  expressed their appreciation for  the support they have received from us to help them improve their written management systems. This helps them control their businesses more effectively. It also increases the awareness of their employees, motivating them to contribute their ideas for a more effective business, creating a safer, tidier, more professional work area. These enterprises have expressed their commitment to maintain and improve their management systems for sustainable business development.

" Business Model 2 Training" for Class 8 and 9

A Swiss trainer, Mr. Christian Satorius, shared with participants of class 8 and 9 about how to create a “Visualised Business Plan” by answering ten questions. This helps enterprises identify a clear development plan which they can share with their employees.

Each class held a competition to see who could most clearly present their business idea and a plan for the next 5-10 years, by answering the ten questions. Each team was given five minutes to present their ideas to the class and the winning team from each class was presented with a prize.

“Communication and Negotiation Skills” and “Team Building" Trainings for Class 9

To make sure the content of our training courses is appropriate, our consultant, Mrs. Hoang Vi Yen together with our staff visited two businesses to understand their specific training needs.

In the training course itself, some situations were addressed using group discussions and role plays, so that the participants could practice applying tools and techniques on communication and negotiation. They gained practical experience in solving difficulties as well as understanding the challenges in motivating employees to work as a team.

COMMUNTY DEVELOMENT PROJECTS
IN VAN CON

Animal Raising Training Needs Assessment

Last month, we visited some households in Van Con commune to identify their animal raising needs. YWAM’s consultant took the opportunity to show them some important techniques to solve issues they were currently facing.

Mr. Vu Dac Loi is a farmer whose cow was injured because of a poorly constructed pen. He wants to attend the training course to learn better techniques in caring for cows.

Mrs. Lung is able to make a good profit from raising cows as she has good skills. She is willing to guide others in the commune from her experience, but she still wants to learn more about how to treat cow diseases.

Mr. Quang, a pig farmer, did not treat one of his pigs which had diarrhea and it kept getting worseOur consultant instructed him how to treat that sick pig and how to make more profit from raising pigs.

Mr. Hoan (right) is interested in learning about treating cattle disease.
A SWOT Analysis was also done with the participants, which identified Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats in raising animals in this location.

Mr. Loan (pictured below) bought a cow to increase his family income. However he does not yet have the basic knowledge and skills in caring for cows, treating cow diseases, and organizing his farming work effectively in order to be successful.

BIOGAS IN TAN LINH

To evaluate and plan the next phase of this project we visited households that are requesting support to build biogas.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Xinh has a plan to expand the number of pigs her family raises and she hopes the project will lend them money to build a 25 cubic meter biogas digester to deal with the pollution problem this will create.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Van's family has some difficulties with pollution as a result of her animal breeding activities. This problem is worsened because there is no drainage and her house doesn't have a toilet. So she wants a loan from project to build a 20 cubic meter biogas digester.

Waste from Mrs. Hoang Thi Tham’s animal pen previously discharged straight into their pond. The resulting pollution was so bad she could not continue to raise fish. Her family built an 18 cubic meter biogas digester and the conditions have become much cleaner. With a planned increase in the number of animals they are raising they intend to build one more digester.

SEXUAL EDUCATION & PUBLIC HEALTH PROJECT IN PHU CHAU

To help students identify and prevent the negative impact of social evils, such as drug use, gambling, pornography, prostitution and other kinds of crime, we organized a training on “Social Evils Prevention” for grade 9 students. Group discussions were incorporated into the lesson so that the large number of students these trainings attracted could interact and learn together.

In addition, we bought more books with many useful topics for the Psychology Counseling room so students can continue to learn  by themselves.

COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE

In response to our story in last month's newsletter, and with the help of local authorities, the International Church in Hanoi, and YWAM, Mrs. Truc’s new house was completed.  Mrs. Truc cried with appreciation and happiness. Mr. Chinh, Truc’s husband, said, "We have felt we are living in paradise from the day we moved to our new house, and we no longer live in fear when the storms come. We promise that we shall live well, and will find opportunities to help other poor families around us as much as we can."

PROJECTS IN BAC GIANG

Bac Lung - Poverty Alleviation

We visited the two wild pig model households. For various reasons this model has taken some time to become effective but we can see that they are more aware of the importance of quality, so they take care of pigs very well. They are also very active in finding customers and now the demand for their pigs is greater than what they can supply so they have plans to expand in the near future.

Bao Son Evaluation

It has been three years since we started in Bao Son, so we are currently evaluating the results in order to design the next phase. During the evaluation we visited many families who have benefited from the project.

Mr. Kien's family recently benefited from the cow bank project. Both husband and wife are in poor health thus cannot do physical labor. Mrs. Chien, Mr. Kien's wife, broke her leg in an accident and they had to borrow ten-million Vietnamese Dong ($500US) from the bank for her treatment. Their only hope of future income is from their cow, so they really hope their cow will have a calf soon to pay back to the project, then they can sell the next calf they to earn money.

We also observed the learning of children in 6 classes of Bao Son preschools to note the changes that the project has brought.

COMMUNITY-BASED CARE FOR CHILDREN IN DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES

Education

The end of school year results are in and we can see many have achieved good study results. Six received certificates of excellence, twenty-eight had good results, and the remaining twenty-six  were classified as average.

We need more sponsors!

We are still looking for more people to sponsor 18 children. If you would like to sponsor a child or would like to give a one-time gift to help support these children please see how you can do that in the information below.
