SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Swiss Create Award

We visited four companies who participated in the previous round of the Swiss Create Award, to support and motivate them to maintain and improve their written internal management systems using the Swiss Create tools. All the Business owners were aware of the importance of auditing and made specific plans for doing this periodically.

Technical Support for Production Optimization Models

Last month, we gave technical assistance to two production optimization models. The focus was to check on evaluation criteria at the production areas. Areas which need to be improved also were identified and given appropriate solutions by YWAM's consultant.

"Family Business" training in Minh Khai Commune

Training on "Family Business" using Swiss Create materials was organized in Minh Khai Commune. Managing a family business effectively was the focus and covered topics such as right mindset, SWOT analysis, and making a business plan using the 10 guiding questions. Good family business models were also shared. Over 60 leaders and members of Women Union and Farmers Association attended.

Household Survey and Loan Disbursment

YWAM staff and the project Board of Management visited ten business households in An Khanh and Duong Lieu Communes which had requested project loans. After seeing their business plans we transferred loans to nine households. Some of these business owners have been trained by the "Small and Medium Enterprises Development" project and have achieved many initial successes when changing business direction.

PROJECTS IN BA VI

Biogas

Loans were dispersed to 12 new households for building biogas digesters and this was followed up with household visits to ensure the effective use of the loans.

Household Survey

Mr. Nguyen Bac De's family currently raises 21 pigs and he has a plan to double that number. It is also costing him one million dong (US $45 dollars) per month for cooking fuel to prepare the animal feed so he has requested a project loan to build a biogas digester.

Mr. Nguyen Dac Thang's family raises 40 pigs and 300 chickens on their farm. He requested a project loan to build a 15 cubic-meter biogas digester to solve the pollution problem which was negatively affecting his neighbours. The biogas digester also provides clean and safe fertiliser to use on his 1,440 meter square tea plantation.

BOM Meeting

A meeting to evaluate project activities during last quarter was held. It showed the project loans for building biogas are being used as expected with all loans paid back in full and on time. A needs assessment shows that there are still a lot of households who would like to access project loans to build biogas in this area.

Community Assistance

“In my whole life, my biggest desire is having a house without leaks--a house that is not flooded when the rain comes--so that my family will be healthy and not be worried in the rainy season.” – Anh Khue shared when we came to visit.

Mr. Khue’s family is one of poorest households in Tong Bat Commune. Mr. Khue has an intellectual disability and poor health since birth so he is incapable of working at anything but tending cows. His wife has to regularly have emergency hospital treatment for asthma and epilepsy and thus cannot work hard either. With the scanty income they make tending a 480 square meter rice paddy, the family of five including three children going to school, are struggling.

Fortunately the children all are mentally capable but they are suffering from malnutrition because of a lack of food. They currently live in a degraded house built with earthen walls which is moldy due to a leaky roof which contributes to their poor health. The children are regularly sick. Mr. Khue decided to borrow money from relatives, neighbors, and The Policy Bank to build a new house but it is still not enough. He wrote a letter to the project Board of Management for support.

The Monsoon season is coming. And another $1,000 US is needed to help this family build a new house. If you would like to support this family in their dream of building a new house for better health, please contact us.

COMMUNITY-BASED CARE FOR CHILDREN IN DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES

PROJECTS IN BAC GIANG

Training on "Family Business Management"

Last month we continued to organise one-day trainings on Family Business Management for local people in Kham Lang Commune. Important tools for income generation such as SWOT analysis, making a business plan, clarifying potential and resources, marketing, and recording expenses, were shared with more than 50 attendees.

Household Visit

YWAM staff together with the project Board of Management visited some beneficiaries in Kham Lang Integrated Rural Development Project Phase III to check the use of loans as well as the development of the cows.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tinh is one of beneficiaries of the cow-bank project. After participating in training courses and other project activities, she is much more confident and has good experience, knowledge and techniques from the training. With her savings and loans from relatives and the project, she decided to develop livestock production and invested 50 million dong (US $2,222 dollars) into building pens for pigs and cows.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoan's family borrowed money from the project in 2013 to purchase cows and pigs. With all the input and training from the project, their income has significantly improved. Her family has quickly escaped from poverty.

Working with the Production Teams

In order to help production teams implement project activities after these activities were transferred to the local Board of Management, YWAM staff organised a meeting with project participants including poor and near-poor households in Doai and Dong Cong Hamlet. Results of project activities and the experience gained after Phase I were shared, and many questions from local people were answered as well. We also informed them of the revised regulations for production teams.
