EDUCATION ASSISTANCE FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015 - 2016

Now is the time when we assess children in difficult circumstances in all the places where we have projects.  Many families need help so their children can continue their education. We work with our local partners to identify children most at risk and provide them with their school supplies for the new school year which is starting in August. There are always more children that need help than we can provide for so if you would like to help us keep children in school you can donate as directed below.

Lan Anh is 12 years old in grade 7 in Bac Giang province. She is living with her grandmother, mother and younger sister in a small house which was built with the money borrowed from relatives and neighbors. The whole family used to depend only on her father's income because her mother is ill. But he recently died while crossing the border to work in China, all life burdens including loans have been put on her sick mother. Despite living in difficulties, Lan Anh always try her best to be a good child at home and an excellent student at school.

Community Assistance

This month,  YWAM staff visited Ms Nguyen Thi Them who received a cow last year. She is a single mom. Before she seemed depressed and had to catch crabs and snails just to feed herself and her son. But after receiving the cow, she is much more alert and confident in communication. She cares for the cow very well. Her cow just gave birth a healthy male calf that made her very happy.

SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

"Production Optimization" training for class 8 and 9

This training course attracted 133 participants. All business owners were aware of the importance of controlling seven wastes in production, applying 5S, identifying and managing work safety. The lecture combining short videos, case studies and real situations helped participants discuss and practice to enhance their company's environment.

After this training course, participants recognized the priority of Production Optimization. 77% business owners said that they would apply 5S into their business, 44% would apply the lesson of "Seven Wastes", 14% would apply "Work Safety". In addition, the organization also gave to each participant a 5S handbook to instruct business owners how to bring 5S and Production Optimization into management system step by step.

"Time Management and Human Resources Management" training for class 8 and 9

Time Management and Human Resources Management tools of Swiss Create were transferred through real situations, role plays, and games. The interactive teaching helped participants practice applying these tools as well as learning  from the experience of the trainers and other business owners. 97 participants of both class 8 and 9 completed this training course.

"Communication and Negotiation Skills” and “Team Building" training for Class 8

In the training course, effective tools and skills on how to solve difficulties in communication, negotiation, motivating employees as a team, working with agencies and suppliers were addressed using group discussions, role plays and games.

Every group encountered problems that helped participants know how to lead the teamwork to a successful outcome.

"Financial Management" training for class 8 and 9

Challenges and roles of business owners in managing finances were discussed and analyzed. All business owners attending this course realized the importance of analyzing financial data in business management and separating family and enterprises's expenses. Four helpful financial management tools including the Balance scorecard, Pricing Calculation, Trading Calculation, and Investment Calculation were practiced.

Training for employees of two Production Optimization models

This month, we organized training days for two Production Optimization models to mobilize the participation of employees in bringing 5S into their business. Areas that need to be improved were shown using real images and were analyzed by both managers and employees. Games encouraging teamwork and building unity were organized creating a lot of  excitement with the employees.

PROJECTS IN BA VI

Biogas in Ba Trai

Mrs Xuyen is waiting for a loan from the project to build a biogas digester. She currently raises twenty pigs and wants to expand the scale. But her plan cannot be implemented until she solves the population problem by building biogas.

Mr Dien is a village head, also a pioneer in the activity of building biogas digester in Ba Trai. With the loan from the project, he built a ten cubic meter biogas digester. He said that the biggest benefit is cleaner environment, he actively shares about biogas with the surrounding neighbours,  and many have come to visit the new digester.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN VAN CON

Visitors

Last month, donors had a meeting with Van Con leaders to learn from their experience when implementing "Community Development" projects. The difficulties and successes in approaching local people to enhance their awareness were shared enthusiastically.

Strategies for phase II were discussed. The Board of Management hope that YWAM will continue to help Van Con develop their economy and raise awareness  so people can escape poverty.

We also visited some households who benefited from the project.

Mrs Mai's family is a household in difficult circumstances. Three years ago, after many hospital visits Mrs Mai was finally diagnosed with a blood disease thought to be bought on by chemicals she was exposed to. The family  had to borrow sixty million dong( $3,000US) for her treatment. Her health has improved but she is still not 100%. Her husband is a construction labourer and has an unstable, low income. Their life is a struggle. However, her children are doing well in school and the oldest daughter received YWAM's education assistance last year.

Training needs assessment on Cultivation Activities

We want to help farmers cut down on the use of pesticides and to make their cultivation activities more cost effective. To do this our consultant Mr. Vu Van Liet and YWAM staff held group discussions with leaders and farmers at each of the five hamlets where we are working. Mr Liet has many years experience in community development, and so easily was able to understand their cultivation methods and understand the difficulties they are facing. He also gave them many useful advise as well as effective techniques to achieve the best result.

We found that farmers depend on seed and fertiliser suppliers for their expertise and advice but this creates higher costs and worse results such as using too much pesticide. This has seriously affected the water source and health of neighbours living close by.

COMMUNITY-BASED CARE FOR CHILDREN IN DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES

Family meeting

In these meetings, families were provided information about their children situation when they are living in the Home, their study results and behaviour. Plans for the summer outing were also discussed.
In addition, they contributed towards firewood and some even contributed towards making a new gate.

We need more sponsors!

We are still looking for more people to sponsor children in our community homes. If you would like to sponsor a child or would like to give a one-time gift to help support these children please see how you can do that in the information below.
