PROJECTS IN BAC GIANG

Bao Son Integrated Community Development Project Evaluation
It's been three years since we first started this project and we want to find out what impact has been made on the community. So our consultant, together with our staff and the members of the local Board of Management, have surveyed 136 households, done more than fifteen in-depth interviews and group discussions, as well as observed six preschool classrooms. The data is currently being analyzed but it is clear this project has made a huge impact on those living in this commune and in particularly the two hamlets where we first launched this project.
Thuy and her husband (in the photo above with their pineapple harvest) Are one family that have benefited from the project. They decided to return to the commune so they could be with their children. They have borrowed money for their pineapple crop and now have a cow to raise.
"Family Management" Training at Kham Lang Commune
A training course on "Family Management" was organised for forty-five members of the Women's Union, health clinic and population department. The participants really enjoyed it and have suggested that we should hold this training course for households and other commune departments.

HOAI DUC SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES PROJECT
The Swiss Create Award
Phu Vinh Hung Company
Thai Duong Company
Viet Thang Company
Viet Long Company
Green Company
The goal of the Swiss Create Award is to push businesses to implement systems for continuous improvements in every aspect of their work. We are now preparing for the second audit in May, so we are following up and checking on the improvements in five of the eight companies participating in the program. They all understand the importance of written internal management systems and they have already made many significant improvements.
Training for Leaders
Last month, we were very pleased to invite Dr. Phan Quoc Viet and his co-workers for a presentation in Van Con, La Phu and Son Dong communes. Three-day workshops on “Self-renewal Towards Being Excellent” attracted more than five-hundred key leaders of communes, hamlets, schools, business associations and health clinics.
Stories, short videos and interesting games were incorporated into this workshop to help participants in their task of raising awareness and teaching life skills in order to implement the “New Countryside” Vision.
Opening Business Class 9
In the middle of April, Mr. Mario Bruhlmann – our Swiss Business consultant – opened business class 9, by presenting the concept of “Business Vision and Business Model”. This is the first of eleven topics this class will learn. Even though only twenty-five had registered more than fifty participants turned up and all were very active and eager, contributing ideas by raising questions and participating in group discussions.
Graduating Business Class 7
The“Leadership Workshop” attracted nearly sixty participants. At the end of this workshop participants who had attended all the training courses of our Small and Medium Enterprises project received their graduation certificate.
Business Visits
Manh Linh Company
Thai Duong Company
Mr. Mario had time to work with Manh Linh and Thai Duong Company. Both these companies have had many improvements after applying 5S and Production Optimization.
Addressing Tax Obligations
We have become aware that business owners have not fully understood their role in tax obligations and so have not paid enough attention to this issue.
Therefore, we invited two business owners who have themselves participated in our training courses  to share their experience and help other business owners to be aware of the importance  paying attention to their tax obligations.
Human Resources and Time Management Assessment
To enhance the quality of this training course, we worked with two business owners in Hoai Duc to identify tools that can help and limitations that need to be addressed in this training.
Meeting with Leaders of Hoai Duc District
In a recent meeting, the Hoai Duc District leaders acknowledged the contribution of YWAM’s projects toward their new economic goals. With the rapid increase in the number of local businesses and the need for job creation they are wanting to further this partnership in promoting good business practice.

PROJECTS IN VAN CON
Loan Disbursement
A total of twenty families in Phuong Quan and Quyet Tien hamlets have just received project loans. To ensure these loans are used effectively, members of the Board of Management guided the beneficiaries in making feasible plans by answering ten question outlined in the Business Family training material of Swiss Create.
Training for Key Leaders
The training course entitled "Leadership Roles in Sustainable Development for the New Countryside Program" has helped key leaders of Van Con commune understand their roles, responsibilities and obligations to their community.
In the group discussion, leaders shared ideas on how to integrate project activities into the Government's New Countryside program, particularly in relationship to goals for: income, poverty reduction, the rate of permanent laborers in the area, culture and environment. Detailed goals for the economic development in the next three years and specific plans also were written down. Many leaders have a great vision to benefit poor households.

BIOGAS IN BA TRAI COMMUNE
Thirteen more families were able to receive project loans for building biogas. Before biogas, livestock waste was discharged indiscriminately in gardens or ditches which negatively affected the environment and the health of people living close by. Now biogas provides them with a new source of fuel that also protects the environment.

Mrs Nga (pictured below) is planning on building biogas. She currently raises 20 pigs and wants to double that number, but unless she solves the pollution problem with biogas she cannot expand. The pollution from her pens (pictured on the left) is currently affecting her neighbours and is contaminating local fish ponds.

BIOGAS IN TAN LINH COMMUNE
This project has been managed locally  for a long time now and continues very well, bringing many benefits to participating households. At a review meeting we realised that the demand for biogas is still very high and so the project will continue into the next phase from 2015 to 2017.

SEXUAL EDUCATION & PUBLIC HEALTH PROJECT IN PHU CHAU
Last month, we organized a workshop for about 60 households to enhance their awareness of Public Health issues particularly on prevention and care of hypertension and diabetes.
In addition, we helped the secondary school set up Psychology Counseling Room for their students and supplied some new books which will be a great resource for both teachers and students.

COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE
Mrs Huong and her daughter were living in a very simple one room cottage that was built by the local community, but there was no running water or bathroom. With the support of a donor we were able to build a bathroom and a rain water tank. A new fence and gate is also being provided.

Children's Homes
Education
Kim Dung - in Van Hoa Children's Home - is one of the top five best Mathematic students in seventh grade. Last week, her team joined amathematics contest for excellent students from mountainous communes and now we are waiting for the result. She also gained the second prize of the District Sports Festival in athletics. We are very proud of her achievements.
Renovation for the Van Hoa Children's Home
In order to improve the quality of the living conditions for the Children in this home we were finally able to sign the contract with Van Hoa People's Committee to reconstruct this home. As soon as we receive the city approval we will be able to commence this construction project.
Other Activities
Making the traditional TROI cake
Gardening
