EDUCATION ASSISTANCE FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015 - 2016

Last month we finished assessing the need for education assistance for poor students in all the communes where we have projects. We have been able to help 256  in Hoai Duc district, 193 in Ba Vi district and 184 in Bac Giang province so far. The commune leaders, business associations and schools also enthusiastically took part in fundraising and doing household surveys. With these small gifts of school supplies we hope these children will be encouraged to achieve good results in the next school year.

PROJECTS IN BA VI

Biogas training for new beneficiaries

We organized two biogas training sessions to make sure that the new beneficiaries, will use their biogas digesters safely and effectively. Participants were twelve households in Tan Linh and nine households in Ba Trai commune, who received loans from the project last month. Trainees learnt techniques to manage and maintain their new equipment.

How to safely treat illness at home

This training session attracted a lot of young mothers with children from zero to six years old in Phu Chau commune. Two consultants explained some common illnesses that children are susceptible to and how to treat these safely at home.

Community Assistance

'Thuy's family is a household in difficult circumstances and receives regular support from us. There are five in the family including three disabled children. Thuy is twelve years old and has epilepsy thus she cannot go to school. The project has supported her education by hiring a private tutor. Hang, one of Thuy's sister's has many disabilities and we have provided diapers for her for the last few months.

Last month we took Loi to the National Eye Hospital for her 6th operation. We hope that she will be able to keep her eye. Her eyesight is severely impaired with only minimal vision in her other eye.  Her mother sadly shared that she only hopes the other eye will not deteriorate further.

Xuan who is paralysed form the waist down has been suffering with pressure sores so we arranged for a Doctor to visit her so that he could advise her mother how to best care for this problem. During the visit we became aware that the roof of the room where Xuan stays is leaking. We are looking for ways we can help the family repair this roof.

The importance of using the internet and computers in business management were the main topics in the two-day training for classes 8 and 9. Basic skills in Microsoft Office Software, searching for information on the internet, and designing a company website were introduced and practiced. Through group discussions, participants learnt how to compile a report, make a production cost accounting calculation and create a presentation for worker training using PowerPoint.

In addition, Swiss Create Business Management Software was installed and practiced in groups.

Group Advising

Five group advising sessions were organized at five communes and attracted the attention of 260 business owners. Many business challenges were discussed. Mr. Christian, a Swiss consultant, emphasized the importance applying different tools to achieve sustainable business development.

Some business owners enthusiastically shared their experience and successes after applying the lessons and management tools they learned from YWAM's training courses.

In this training course, Mrs. Ha Thi Thanh Van, the deputy director of the Vietnam Women's Institute, shared her experience of keeping a work-life balance. Lessons and skills on maintaining family happiness, educating children, balancing business relationships etc., were addressed using real situations, stories and games. Technical Support for Production Optimization Models

5S and Production Optimization training for workers

Combining short videos introducing successful models and using games to build teamwork helped sixty employees be aware of the importance of applying 5S and Production Optimization in their business as well as identifying issues and managing work safety at their production area.

Assessment for 2015 Production Optimization Models

We continue to observe and monitor the process of implementing Production Optimization of models after transferring concepts.

PROJECTS IN BAC GIANG

Meeting with Luc Nam District Leaders

Mr. Toan, vice-president of Luc Nam district, shared many useful ideas about key issues when implementing the Bac Giang projects. We also took this time to discuss development orientation for the future. Mr Toan expressed his great appreciation of YWAM's activities and would like us to expand the projects in his district.

Meeting with the Board of Management in Kham Lang

Four Production teams reported on the results of activities implemented in June and July as well as challenges and advantages when doing the project. Plans for the next month also were mentioned including training schedule, training topics and Biogas activities.

Training on International Economic Integration

A training day for leaders, representatives of departments, and hamlet leaders in Kham Lang commune was organized. This topic was new to them, however, Mrs. Mai, - YWAM consultant from the Economy University, explained clearly through practical examples how this related directly to their local area. This helped the sixty attendees be aware of the changing Vietnamese market in the coming years. Leaders were very active when participating in discussions and sharing results from the group work. They saw this training course as very necessary to help the local people understand more clearly how these changes will impact their economic activities and how they can best prepare themselves.

Cow Bank Activity

Mr. Trong's family received a cow from the cow bank. With only 72 square meters of cultivation land for making a living, they can not produce enough to feed their family. Last month, they were given a calf. That made them very happy. They promised they would care for her well and pay back the loan with a healthy calf to the project as soon as their calf is able.

Cow Care Training for Kham Lang Commune

The two-day training course on breeding livestock attracted nearly fifty people. With many years experience, Mr Thanh, from the Hanoi Agricultural I University, instructed participants specifically about how to care for their cow in winter and addressed some common diseases in rainy season, including prevention and treatment. Many useful questions were addressed and experiences were shared amongst attendees. They would like more training classes so that they can improve their knowledge and techniques on caring for livestock to escape poverty.

COMMUNITY-BASED CARE FOR CHILDREN IN DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES

Summer Outing

This summer vacation, all the children under our care came together and had amazing moments enjoying Cua Lo Beach. They spent time learning how to swim, playing lots of interesting games, building sand castles, and collecting sea shells. It was also a great opportunity to build closer relationships between children and staff.

Other Activities

Free hair-cuts for all the children
We provided 10kg of rice for each child's family

We need more sponsors!

We are still looking for more people to sponsor children in our community homes. If you would like to sponsor a child, or would like to give a one-time gift to help support these children, please contact us at the address below.
